Tracheal Collapse
Today I'd like to discuss with you a condition called the tracheal collapse and this is a condition where the trachea or the windpipe that leads down into the lungs actually collapses upon itself .
Obstructing the airway just makes it very difficult for our pets to breathe.
Our pets respond with a cough and so violence sometimes it actually sounds like a goose honking .
Now the trachea is comprised of a series of cartilage rings and as these rings weaken when our pets take a breath that collapse down upon themselves this is more common in our toy breeds I have seen it in several breeds in several weights but it's more common in the toy breeds especially our overweight toy breeds .
Treatment Of Tracheal Collapse :
Treatment includes a combination of cortical steroids to reduce inflammation .
Bronchodilators to help them breathe .
Cough suppressants but the mainstay of the treatment protocol is weight loss many animals respond very low to this protocol but occasionally we run across one that is so severe that the only option we have is surgery or we have to go in and then plant a stent .
It's not perfect because they're trying to expel a foreign body that's in there but the passageway is open .
Our pets can breathe and they're a lot more comfortable.
